How to Hire a Freelance Graphic Designer in Manchester
If you've searched for a "graphic designer in Manchester", you've probably found two very different types of results: big agencies with big price tags, and a long list of individual freelancers with wildly different levels of experience. It's hard to know who's actually right for your business.
I've been a freelance graphic designer for nearly 15 years, working with businesses in Manchester and across the UK on branding, print and web design. This post covers what to actually look for, what it costs, and how the process works, so you can hire with confidence, whether that's me or someone else.
Why businesses in Manchester choose a freelancer over an agency
Manchester has no shortage of design agencies, but for most single projects (a rebrand, a new website, a set of marketing materials) a freelancer is usually the better fit.
You get:
- One point of contact. No account manager relaying messages between you and the person actually doing the work.
- Faster turnaround. There's no internal sign-off chain slowing things down.
- Lower cost. You're not paying for agency overheads, just the work itself.
- More personal investment. Your project isn't one of twenty running through a studio at once.
That doesn't mean freelancers are only suited to small jobs. I've delivered full brand identities and website builds for asset management firms, property developers and charities that needed agency-level output without the agency price tag or timeline.
What to look for in a Manchester graphic designer
Location matters less than it used to, since most design work happens over video calls and shared files rather than in person, but there are still a few things worth checking before you commit:
Relevant sector experience. A designer who's already worked in your industry, whether that's property, finance, hospitality or the charity sector, will understand your context faster and need far less hand-holding to get the brief right.
A portfolio that shows range, not just a style. Some designers have one visual look they apply to every client. Look for evidence they can adapt tone: polished and trust-led for a financial firm, warmer and more approachable for a charity or consumer brand.
Both creative and technical skill. A nice-looking mockup isn't the same as a production-ready file, a properly built website, or artwork that's print-ready to spec. Ask what happens after the design is "finished."
Clear communication from the first enquiry. How someone responds to your initial message is usually a good preview of how the whole project will go.
What does a freelance graphic designer in Manchester cost?
Costs vary by project scope. As a rough guide:
- A single asset (a logo refresh, a flyer, a set of social graphics) might run from a few hundred pounds.
- A full brand identity typically sits in the low thousands.
- A complete website build, depending on scope, is usually a similar or slightly higher investment.
I quote per project based on the brief rather than a day rate, so the cost is agreed upfront before any work starts, with no surprises halfway through.
How long does a design project take?
Most branding projects take two to four weeks. A full website build usually takes four to eight weeks depending on scope and how quickly feedback comes back. Smaller jobs, like a single asset or a short set of graphics, can often be turned around in days.
Timelines get agreed once the brief is confirmed, so you'll know what to expect before committing.
Manchester businesses I've worked with
Some local projects include brand identity and campaign work for Step Up Mcr, a place-based community giving charity, and City of Social Action, which supports young people running social action projects across the city. Print and digital dssign work for AIL property and branding and website design for Frenkel Topping Group. Alongside Manchester-based clients, I've also delivered branding, print and website design for businesses in property, finance and hospitality across the UK and internationally. You can see more of my work on the portfolio page.
How to get started
The quickest way to move forward is to send a rough outline of what you need and your timeline through the Contact page. From there, I'll come back with a quick consultation, which will help me to develop a clear quote, and a proposed timeline before anything starts.
If you're still working out whether it's the right move, the FAQ's page covers the questions I get asked most often, from what to include in a brief to how remote projects actually work day-to-day.
